Notes:

1. Latitude/longitude, including for days in port, show representative decimal positions for each day, as calculated by the Old Weather project's analysis program. As such, they differ by varying amounts from the positions recorded, usually at noon, in the log pages. In addition, some latitudes/longitudes have been amended in edited logs for errors in the logs, for errors in identifying locations by the analysis program, or simply for greater accuracy. In all cases, refer to the log-page scans for the positions as originally recorded. Not all log pages contain this information and the ships' positions have therefore often been estimated.

2. Full account of any day is available by clicking on the link above that day. Groups of links refer to log book covers and introductory information; some may be blank.

24 January 1915

BATTLE OF DOGGER BANK

At sea, southern North Sea

Lat 54.4, Long 5.7

Weather synopsis: Wind ENE to N by E, light airs, force 1–3; sea state 2; air temperature 41–46ºF; sea temperature 42–45ºF.

Note: On this day, HMS Princess Royal was a participant in the Battle of the Dogger Bank. Additional notes inserted on this page are extracted from an account of the battle contained in Robert K. Massie’s book ‘Castles of Steel’.

2.00am: Altered course S 75ºE, 18½ knots.

5.35am: “Alarm”. Altered course S30ºE.

5.40am: Altered course SSE.

Note: Just after 7am, the Battle Cruiser Fleet (BCF) arrived at the rendezvous point where they were to meet Tyrwhitt’s light forces, coming up from Harwich.

7.04am: Altered course S12ºW, 15 knots(?)

Note: At 7.20am a message was received from Aurora, leading one of Tyrwhitt’s destroyer flotillas that had been delayed by fog, stating that she was in action with German ships.

7.20am: 20 knots.

Note: At 7.35am Hipper, realising that he was running his force into trouble, ordered his ships to turn southeast and run for home at 20 knots. The maximum speed of Hipper’s fleet was limited to 23 knots by the presence of the armoured cruiser Blücher.

7.37am: Altered course SSE.

7.44am: Altered course SE.

7.46am: 22 knots.

7.48am: Altered course SSE.

7.50am: Sighted the enemy on the port bow:- Four Battle Cruisers, three Light Cruisers and many destroyers.

7.52am: Altered course ESE.

7.58am: Altered course SE½E.

Note: The speeds noted in the following entries were signalled from Beatty’s flagship, Lion. As noted here, they are probably a record of orders received, rather than speeds actually achieved at the time. As the fourth and fifth Battle Cruisers in the line (New Zealand and Indomitable) were, at best, capable of speeds of 25–26 knots, they began to fall astern of the first three ships (Lion, Tiger and Princess Royal) from here on.

8.10am: Altered course SSE, 24 knots.

8.16am: 25 knots.

8.18am: Altered course SE by S.

8.22am: 26 knots.

8.29am: Altered course S40ºE.

8.33am: 27 knots.

8.37am: Altered course S50ºE.

8.43am: 28 knots in full chase.

8.55am: Lion opened fire on rear ship Blücher 20,000 yards. Fell short.

Note: Massie states that Lion began ranging shots on the Blücher at 8.52am.

9.00am: Tiger opened fire – ranging shots only. Enemy returning ? Cuxhaven.

9.05am: ‘S’ flag hoisted (open fire).

Note: The signals hoisted at 9.05am was ‘Open fire and engage the enemy’.

9.07am: Princess Royal opened fire on rear ship. Have the lee gauge.

9.15am: Altered course S40ºE. Enemy opened fire on us – first shots fell short, but some straddled.

Note: German fire was commenced by the Blücher, last ship in the line. Other German ships opened fire shortly afterwards. At 9.28am, Lion was hit for the first time (8.2” shell from Blücher).

9.33am: Altered course SE by E.

Note: By 9.35am, HMS New Zealand (fourth in line) had come within range of Blücher and opened fire leaving only HMS Indomitable still unengaged.

9.43am: Altered course S30ºE.

9.50am: 25 knots. Hauled out to port to get on Tiger’s quarter. Leading enemy’s ship Seydlitz on fire.

Note: At 9.45am, a 13.5” shell from Lion struck Seydlitz and pierced the armour of the aftermost turret. The ensuing cordite fire destroyed two turrets, killing both crews, and almost leading to her destruction. At 9.53am, Lion slowed to 24 knots to allow the BCF to close up somewhat.

9.55am: Their destroyers attempted an attack but retired – result heavy smoke closed.

10.00am: Altered course SE.

10.05am: Altered course SE by E.

10.10am: Altered course ESE, 27 knots.

Note: At 10.18am, Lion received a shell hit that contaminated the fresh water supply to the port engine, leading to it being closed down. This hit also caused major flooding and eventually Lion had to pull out of the line.

10.20am: Check fire. Range too great, proceeded at full speed. (Enemy’s third ship, the Moltke, had hauled away to port, opening the range.)

10.25am: Blücher on fire.

10.27am: Princess Royal opened fire again on Moltke and straddled.

10.37am: Altered course 1 point to port.

10.40am: 26 knots.

10.45am: Altered course ESE. 10.50am: 27.5 (knots). Got in a salvo on the Moltke. Indomitable ordered to chase ship escaping to the northward (Blücher). Lion with a 10º list to port hauls out to port and drops astern, her speed reckoned to be 12 knots.

10.50am: Airship sighted ESE 12 miles.

Note: By 10.52am, Lion had received 14 hits and had taken on board 3000 tons of water.

11.00am: Altered course 8 points to port NNE.

Note: This major (90º) turn to port was in response to reports of submarines on Lion’s starboard bow. These reports were almost certainly mistaken. Subsequent signals from Lion to the remaining other Battle Cruisers (see Massie for details), led to confusion in the other ships which abandoned the chase and concentrated on the hapless Blücher. At this point, the Battle of the Dogger Bank was effectively over, bar the final destruction of the Blücher.

11.08am: Repeatedly hit the rear ship Blücher.

11.09am: Altered course NE.

11.13am: Altered course ENE, 28 knots.

11.21am: Altered course E.

11.25am: Our destroyers attempted an attack on the Blücher, before she was out of action, and the Meteor got badly damaged, the remainder retired.

11.30am: Altered course S60ºE.

11.37am: Altered course SE by S.

11.45am: Check fire. Blücher seems to be practically reduced. 22 knots.

11.45am: Altered course West, 26 knots.

12 noon: Altered course SW, 25 knots.

12.04pm: Altered course WNW.

12.06pm: Altered course NW 28 knots.

Note: At 12.07pm, Blücher capsized and sank a few minutes later. 234 men were saved from her crew.

12.14pm: 22 knots.

12.20pm: Altered course NW by N.

12.24pm: 20 knots.

12.25pm: 12 knots.
