Monitor, M.29-class

 

355t, 1915(c), 2-6in, 9kts, 72 crew. Served in WW2, sold 1948 (British Warships 1914-1919)

M.31 (Harland & Wolff, Belfast, laid 3/15, launched 24/6/15, completed 7/15, BU 1948) Served in Mediterranean August 1915-March 1919. Paid off at Mudros and towed home. White Sea May-September 1919. Completed conversion to minelayer at Portsmouth in January 1921 and assigned to HMS Defiance, the Torpedo School at Devonport. Named Melpomene in December 1925 and remained at Devonport, and although put on sales list in 1937 was unsold in September 1939 and returned to naval duties, serving as torpedo instruction vessel, with a single 21in TT on the forecastle. Renamed Menelaus in 1941 to avoid confusion with Free French ship of same name and BU in 1948. (Conway's All the World's Fighting Ships 1906-21)

[This note was added by one of the original transcribers: "On August 24, 1919, HMS Glowworm went to the assistance of a barge that was burning on a bank of the Dvina River. As the Glowworm came alongside the barge, which unbeknownst to the Glowworm was laden with explosives, blew up killing Glowworm's captain (Commander Sebald Green, who was also commanding the flotilla) and 17 of the officers and men of the Glowworm's crew. At least 18 other crew members were injured in the incident." The transcriber also provided a link to a website but unfortunately it is no longer active.]
