The winds began to strengthen about midnight and by 4.0am were F6, ESE. The gunboats, shallow draughted and with very low freeboard could not keep the sea in these conditions, hence the anchorage in the bay. Fortunately the wind backed to North of East later, greatly increasing the safety of the anchorage.
