Notes:

1. Latitude/longitude, including for days in port, show representative decimal positions for each day, as calculated by the Old Weather project's analysis program. As such, they differ by varying amounts from the positions recorded, usually at noon, in the log pages. In addition, some latitudes/longitudes have been amended in edited logs for errors in the logs, for errors in identifying locations by the analysis program, or simply for greater accuracy. In all cases, refer to the log-page scans for the positions as originally recorded. Not all log pages contain this information and the ships' positions have therefore often been estimated.

2. Full account of any day is available by clicking on the link above that day. Groups of links refer to log book covers and introductory information; some may be blank.

(Maps prepared using Journey Plotter, developed by Maikel. The Plots can only be approximate. They are made by joining-up positions on successive days, and sometimes positions are not given. There will therefore be occasions when the ship appears to have travelled overland)

[HMS Dauntless, 4650 ton cruiser, was launched in 1918 by Palmers Shipbuilding & Iron Co, Jarrow. She took part in the ‘Empire Cruise’ in 1923/24, ran aground off Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1928 and spent much of the inter-war years in reserve. During WW2 she commenced convoy duties until 1943 when she became a training ship. She was sold in 1946.

HMS Dragon, 5000 ton cruiser, was launched in 1917 by Scotts Shipbuilding & Engineering Co Ltd, Greenock. She took part in the closing stages of WW1, alternating between service and reserve before WW2 when she escorted convoys. In 1943 she was transferred to Polish command but continued her escort duties. She supported the Normandy landings until hit by a manned torpedo. She was then sunk as part of Mulberry B.

HMS Danae, 5000 ton cruiser, was launched in 1918 by Armstrong Whitworth, Walker-on-Tyne. She took part in the closing stages of WW1, stayed in commission through much of the inter-war years before spending most of WW2 on convoy protection. She was transferred to Polish command after the loss of “Dragon” before she was sold in 1948.

HMS Argus, 14,680 ton aircraft carrier, was laid down as the cruise liner “Conte Rosso” at William Beardmore’s yard in Dalmuir in 1914. Work was suspended at the outbreak of war and she was converted into an aircraft carrier but too late to take part in WW1. Between the wars she was used in the development of landing arrangements for aircraft. In WW2 she delivered aircraft and took part in some convoy protection. In 1943 she was used for training, then as an accommodation ship and sold in 1945.

HMS Campbell, 1610 ton flotilla leader, was launched in 1918 too late for WW1. She spent much of the inter-war years in reserve and then convoy protection in WW2. She was sold in 1947.]
