Weymouth-class 2nd-class/light cruiser

Pendant No 90 (1914). Launched 20.9.10 Beardmore. 5,250 tons, 453(oa), 430(pp)x48x15ft. Turbine 22000shp, 25kts. Armament: 8-6 in. 1-3in AA, 2-21in tt. Armour: 2in deck. 1st LCS 1914, 2nd LCS 1914-15, 3rd LCS 1915-16. Sunk 19.8.16 by U.63 in the North Sea. Battle Honours (and links to despatches, casualties, awards) Heligoland 1914 28 Aug 1914, Jutland 1916 31 May 1916. (British Warships 1914-1919)

Attached to 2nd BS, Home Fleet on commissioning and then in June 1913 appointed to 2nd LCS. joined 5th CS in August 1914 and sank German merchantmen Fasolt, Ochtum, Borkum and Hude during that month. Joined 1st LCS as flagship in December, then 3rd LCS at Rosyth in February 1915. In action at Jutland, being hit by one shell; after battle became flagship until sunk. She was damaged by a torpedo from U.66 (some sources - U.63) on 19 August 1916 while screening Grand Fleet, and was towed to Flamborough Head, but was torpedoed again, by U.63 (some sources - U.52) and sank next day (battle honours - Heligoland 1914, Jutland 1916). [Udsire , now Utsire is a small community in Norway which has given its name to the North and South Utsire Regions of the Shipping Forecast.

Hotten or Stotten Light does not appear in the Wikipedia list of lighthouses. I have not been able to locate this structure.

The King Edward Class of Battleships were about 16500 tons, 8 of them were built in all.

LCS is Light Cruiser Squadron, in December 1914 it consisted of Southampton (flag), Birmingham, Falmouth, Nottingham (http://www.navweaps.com/index_oob/OOB_WWI/OOB_WWI_Scarborough-Raid.htm )]

[HMS Cochrane, 13800 ton cruiser, was launched from Fairfield’s yard in Govan in 1905. She stranded on the River Mersey in November 1918 and the wreck broke up.

HMS Arethusa, a cruiser of 3500 tons, was launched from the Fairfield yard in Govan in 1913. She struck a mine of Felixstowe in February 1916 and was wrecked. At this time she was flying the Flag of Commodore Reginald Tyrwhill.

HMS Undaunted, a cruiser of 3500 tons, was launched from the Fairfield yard in Govan in 1914. She was sold in 1923.

HMS Aurora, also a cruiser of 3500 tons, was launched in 1913 at Devonport Dockyard. In 1918 she was sold to the Canadian Navy who sold her for scrap in 1927.

Heligoland is a small archipelago in the North Sea.

Repeating ships are used as a sort of ‘relay station’ to pass on the orders of the ‘flag ship’ to those ships at the back of the line. Orders would be by flag or signal lamp rather than radio in many cases.]

12 noon Veered 9 shackles on starboard anchor and 4½ on port. Steam in main engines, worked engine as necessary to take strain off cables. Wind gradually eased in force with furious squalls & heavy rain with slowly rising barometer.
