[Francis Palmer Smythies was born on 20 April 1900. He left the Royal Navy as a Lieutenant on 21 March 1923 and was commissioned in to the RAF, joining No. 1 Flying Training School, Netheravon as a Flying Officer on an on 14 May 1923. He was promoted through to Wing Commander on 1 March 1940 and was Officer Commanding of Kohat Airfield in NWFP in India from May 1943 to December 1943 retiring from the Armed Forces in 1946. http://www.rafcommands.com/archive/07193.php]
