GUADALCANAL: An attempt by the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines (rein), the 2d Battalion, 5th Marines, and the 1st Raider Battalion to cross the Matanikau River upstream was repulsed by defending Japanese. The 1st Battalion executed an amphibious landing west of Point Cruz to strike the Japanese Matanikau line from the rear but was forced to withdraw
