This operation has been conducted by Commander in Chief, Rosyth for ease of co operation with 18 Group. It consists of anti U-boat sweeps by a force of three Home Fleet destroyers based on Skaalefiord against U-boats passing to and from the Atlantic through the Iceland – Faroes passage; she ships are assisted in their hunt by aircraft from 18 Group

ONSLOW (Senior Officer), ORWELL, and OBDURATE escorted an oiler to Skaalefiord and commenced the operation on 5th July. The detailed movements of these ships engaged on the operation are shown in the foregoing paragraphs, ONSLOW was relieved by OPPORTUNE was Senior Officer of the Force on 12th July.

The first fortnight of the operation was unsuccessful and, owing to other operations, the scarcity of U-boats and the shortage of destroyers, the operation was temporarily suspended on 17th July and OPPORTUNE, ORWELL, and OBDURATE returned to Scapa with the oiler.

With the intention of resuming this operation, the oiler BLUE RANGER was escorted to Skaalefiord by ORIBI and ORWELL on 27th July. (i) The object of this operation was to arouse enemy interest and focus attention on the South Norwegian coast by a simultaneous converging movement on that area by a number of forces, designed to simulate a large scale raid. By achieving this object it is hoped to increase the growing Òwar of nervesÓ against Germany and to pin down enemy forces in Norway before the launching of the Sicilian campaign.

(ii) Use was made of the route German reconnaissance and Zenit flights to report the four separate forces taking part.
