The convoy of 45 ships left Lowe Ewe on the 15th. Vice Admiral Commanding, Tenth Cruiser Squadron in VINDEX left Scapa on the 16th with STRIKER and JAMAICA, escorted by VOLAGE, ALGONQUIN, VERULAM, VIRAGO, SCOURGE, WHIRLWIND, and WRANGLER. These seven destroyers were detached to the Faroes where they arrived on the 17th. On 16th, the eight Russian destroyers (four stackers transferred from the Royal Navy ex United States Navy) left accompanied by CASSANDRA and on the 17th ARCHANGEL (ex ROYAL SOVEREIGN) flying the flag of Vice Admiral Levchenko accompanied by SCORPION, SERAPIS, and CAMBRIAN also left to rendezvous with the convoy on the 20th. In addition, ten Russian M.L.'s also sailed with the convoy.

On passage, 23 U-boats were sighted though none was allowed closer than 40 miles from the convoy. The two carriers flew 444 hours in the U-boat area and made 14 attacks at distances between 50 and 75 miles from the convoy. There were no casualties to aircraft. 1 U-boat was destroyed by a Swordfish from VINDEX and one possible was claimed. 1 BV 138 was shot down by STRIKER's Wildcats. In addition it is estimated that three other U-boat attacks were promising.

On 21st KITE was hit amidships starboard side by two torpedoes while recovering foxer displacers and sank immediately. There were only nine survivors.

The Russian warships arrived at Kola on the 24th having parted on 23rd and the remained of the convoy arrived the following day.

RA 59 A: The return of nine ships sailed from Kola on 28th August and arrived at Loch Ewe on 5th September. VINDEX, STRIKER, JAMAICA, and the Fleet destroyers arrived Scapa on the 6th. Swordfish from VINDEX attacked the only U-boat sighted, on 2 September; it was destroyed by KEPPEL, WHITEHALL, PEACOCK, and MERMAID. On arrival, Vice Admiral Commanding, Tenth Cruiser Squadron's flag was transferred to JAMAICA.

Two B.V. 138's were brought down by INDEFATIGABLE's Seafires. At 1755 NABOB and BICKERTON were torpedoed and the latter sunk. NABOB was escorted back to Scapa arriving on the 27th.

On the 24th another combined strike was flown off. Heavy smoke obscured the target. Three possible hits were claimed. FURIOUS was detached to Scapa on the 26th.

Force One fuelled at the Faroes on 26th/27th and another attack was carried out on the 29th. Two near misses and one possible hit were claimed by Corsairs and 7 Seafires claimed satisfactory results from a subsidiary attack on Hammerfest.
