HMS PATROLLER (D 07) - Ruler-class Ecort Aircraft Carrier

RULER-Class Escort Aircraft Carrier obtained under US/UK Lend Lease Agreement.  A mercantile which was under construction by Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corporation at Seattle. This ship was requisitioned by the US Navy for completion as an auxiliary aircraft carrier (CVE44) She had been laid down on 27th November 1942 and was launched on 6th May 1943 as USS KEWEENAW. She was formally transferred on Lend/Lease to the Royal Navy on 22nd October 1943 and commissioned as HMS PATROLLER before completion three days later. During build the ship was fitted with US Navy radar outfits

                22nd       Formal transfer to RN and commissioned for service as HMS PATROLLER.

                25th        Build completion and commenced Acceptance Trials

 

November              Carried out Acceptance Trials

                                (Note: These included Full Power trials and operation of essential services.

                22nd       On completion of trials took passage to San Francisco.

 

December              Nominated for service as a Ferry Carrier in newly formed East Indies Fleet based in Ceylon

                3rd          Sailed from San Francisco for Australia with aircraft.

                14th        At Wellington, New Zealand.

                7th          At San Francisco.

                15th        Transferred on loan to US Army for deployment as Ferry Carrier.

 

April                       US Army deployment in continuation.

                6th          Passage to Esquimalt.

                23rd        Arrived at Esquimalt

 

May                        Reverted to RN control

                2nd         Passage to San Francisco and took return passage to Vancouver.

                                Taken in hand at Esquimalt for modifications needed to suit RN requirements during

                                operational service

                25th        Took passage to UK with call at San Francisco.

 

August                  Passage through Panama Canal

                10th        At Norfolk, Va

                27th        Took passage to Liverpool for service in Western Approaches Command.

                                (Note: Ship may have joined Convoy ON252 which sailed from Liverpool on 7th.)

                                (Note: Ship may have detached from ON252 which arrived in New York on 22nd.)

                                Sailed for Clyde after embarking aircraft and may have made independent passage

                                (Note: joined Convoy CU.41 at NYC on 29 September 1944 and arrived Liverpool

                                on 10 October 1944, with thanks to Mark Mudge).

                9th          Under repair in Clyde commercial shipyard.

                21st         Deployed for deck landing trials by CORSAIR aircraft of 1845 Squadron.

February                Passage to San Diego via Panama Canal.

                28th        Arrive in San Diego to embark aircraft.

 

March

                4th          Sailed from San Diego for deployment as a Ferry Carry for US Navy in Pacific.

 

April

                11th        Returned to San Diego

                17th        Sailed for Norfolk, Va

 

May

                1st           Released from loan service on arrival at Norfolk.

                                Resumed RN service.

                4th          Embarked CORSAIR aircraft

                5th          Took passage to Clyde.

                21st         Arrived in Clyde

                                Nominated for refit and took passage to Liverpool.

                26th        Taken in hand for refit in Liverpool commercial shipyard.

                                Nominated for service in Rosyth Command on completion

P o s t   R N  S e r v i c e

 

After return to US Navy this ship was placed in Reserve and 1948 when sold for use as a mercantile was renamed ss ALMKERK she was used for trade until 1969 when resold for further commercial use and renamed PACIFIC ALLIANCE.  She ceased trade use in 1973 and was sold for demolition in Taiwan where she arrived at the breaker’s yard in Kaohsing in February 1974.
