ORIBI-Class Fleet Destroyer ordered from John
Brown at Clydebank, Glasgow on 3rd September 1939 with the 1st Emergency
Flotilla. The ship was laid down on 1 July 1940 and launched on 31st March 1941
as the second ship to carry this name. Completed as a Flotilla Leader on 8th
October 1941 at a cost of £416,942. She was adopted in February 1942 by the
civil community of Oldham, Lanes, after a successful WARSHIP WEEK National
Savings campaign.

escort for HM Cruiser NORFOLK which was taking King Haakon
of Norway
back to Oslo, with HM
Cruiser DEVONSHIRE, HM Destroyers OBDURATE, ORWELL and
Norwegian
Destroyer STORD.
(Operation
INDESTRUCTIBLE)
7th Arrived in Oslo
with tumultuous reception.
12th Sailed from Oslo
with RN ships and detached later for passage to Copenhagen.
Deployed for
support of re-occupation and Guardship duties.
July Visited Rotterdam during which a firework
display was given.
(Note: Due to
an accidental explosion of fireworks some civilian casualties were caused.)
August
Home Fleet Guardship and visits deployment in
continuation.
P o s t W a r N o t e s
HMS ONSLOW remained with Home
Fleet and participated in the collection and destruction of U-Boats (Operation DEADLIGHT) between 29th December 1945 and 3rd
February 1946. The ship was then deployed for submarine training and trials at Portsmouth until
being reduced to Reserve in April 1947. She was laid up at Devonport and placed on the Disposal List. Sold to
Pakistan on 30th September 1949. She was commissioned as TIPPU SULTAN and served as a
Fleet destroyer until 1957. This ship was then converted for use as an Anti Submarine Frigate at Birkenhead returned to service in
1960. Last of the Class to remain in use she was taken off the active list and scrapped in 1980.
