Type I HUNT
Class Escort Destroyer ordered on 11th April 1939 from Alex Stephen at Govan,
Glasgow under 1939 Programme and laid down on 27th July 1939 as Job No 1471.
She was launched on 5th June 1910 as the 1st RN ship to bear the name, that of
a fox-hunt in Northumbria. Build was completed on 2nd December 1940. After a
successful WARSHIP WEEK National Savings campaign in February 1942 the ship was
adopted by the civil community of Hexham, Northumberland. A close association
established with this ship by Hexham continued after her loss in 1943. Her
career has been recorded by Martin Francis in TYNEDALE'S WARSHIPS published in
1994 and is also covered by exhibits in the local Museum. Reunions have been
held in Hexham since the end of WW2.
