HMS RAINBOW (16 R) - R-class Submarine

R-Class Patrol submarine ordered on 28th January 1929 from HM Dockyard Chatham and laid down on 24th July 1929. This submarine was launched on 14th May 1930 and was the 9th RN warship to bear the name which was introduced in 1808. It had previously been used by a cruiser built in 1891 and transferred to Canada in 1910. Build was completed on 18th January 1932 and this submarine was then commissioned for service in the 4th Submarine Flotilla for service on the China Station where she was deployed until 1940.

January                  Flotilla deployment in continuation based at Singapore.

  

April                       Nominated for transfer to Mediterranean.

to                            Pennant Number for visual signalling purposes changed to N6 1.

May

 

June                        Passage to Alexandria for service with 1st Submarine Flotilla based at Alexandria and

                                supported by HM Deport Ship MEDWAY.

 

July                         Deployed with Flotilla in eastern Mediterranean for interception of enemy warships and

to                            mercantiles.

September

 

October                  Deployed in Otranto Strait.

                15th        Sighted on surface by Italian submarine TOTI and sunk in position 38.15N, 17.37E by

                                surface gunfire.
