Built Pembroke DY, laid 15/11/11, launched 12/6/12, completed 10/13, sold for BU 11/21) was leader of 1st DF at Harwich from August 1914 to 1916 then became leader of 12th Submarine Flotilla, Grand Fleet (K class) until the end of war. Note: On this day, both the Grand Fleet and the Battle Cruiser Fleet (to which the Fearless was attached) put to sea in an attempt to intercept the German raid on Lowestoft and Yarmouth. This raid had been forewarned by ‘Room 40’ decodes of German signals the previous day. However, the German High Seas Fleet (the battleships) and the High Seas Scouting Force (Hipper’s battlecruisers) returned to German waters without being intercepted. Royal Navy units were recalled at 11.10am and returned to their bases by the evening of the 25th.

Note: Marlborough had been hit by a torpedo at approximately 7.00pm the previous evening. Tarrant, in ‘Jutland: the German perspective’, writes: “Meanwhile Marlborough had sighted Fearless astern, in the first light of dawn. This light cruiser had lost touch with the 1st Destroyer Flotilla during the daylight action the previous day, and she now embarked Vice-Admiral Burney and his staff from Marlborough and conveyed them to Revenge, so that Burney could resume command of the 6th Division. The damaged Marlborough was then ordered to make for the Tyne with Fearless as escort.”
