on the Transition of the Home Fleets to the Grand Fleet and
Channel Fleet, 1912-1914
by Graham Watson
From May 1912, the CinC Home Fleets had overall
responsibility for the three fleets, and he was also CinC
First Fleet. A Vice Admiral - under him - commanded both
the Second and Third Fleets. They became separate commands on
mobilisation.
Until his departure in August 1914, Admiral Sir George Callaghan was CinC Home Fleets as well as CinC First Fleet. Vice Admiral Sir Frederick Hamilton commanded the Second and Third Fleets. He was succeeded by Vice Admiral Sir Cecil Burney in December 1913. On mobilisation, Callaghan was replaced by Sir John Jellicoe as CinC Grand Fleet [the renamed First Fleet], Sir Cecil Burney became CinC Channel Fleet, and Vice Admiral Sir Alexander Bethell moved from the War College to take over the Third Fleet.
