LOCATIONS OF ROYAL NAVY SHIPS, 1914-1918 (Part 1 of 6)

PART 1 - LOG BOOKS and THEIR PLACE IN THE LOCATION OF ROYAL NAVY SHIPS in WORLD WAR 1

HMS Swiftsure, battleship (Photo Ships)

on to Part 2, Admiralty Pink Lists

Introduction

For any researcher of the Royal Navy in World War 1, the ideal would be to have access to records describing what every vessel was doing on any given day. This would be a huge undertaking, and needs careful thought and planning as how best to set about and maintain momentum towards a sensible database (DB).

Naval-History.Net has decided to make a start with more readily available information, which are the first five parts of the Contents on the right. These are hopefully in order of authoritativeness and accuracy. (But see comments about Pink Lists in Part 2).

The sixth Part is a starting database which other researchers are invited to work on and expand. If you would like to have this, please copy and dlownload it, or contact  Gordon Smith. Please also note that I can only respond to emails on this particular subject.

Contents

to be added

3. History of the Great War - Naval Operations, Vols 1 to 5

4. Mainly Contemporary Accounts

5. Fleet Distribution Lists from "British Warships 1914-1919" by F J Dittmar & J J Colledge

6. A Starting Database (DB) incorporating log book sources, the two currently available pink lists, and battle honour lists

Notes
Main abbreviations: ABS - armed boarding steamers; BS - Battle Squadron; BCS - Battlecruiser Squadron; CS - Cruiser Squadron; DF - Destroyer Flotilla; LCS - Light Cruiser Squadron; TB - torpedo boats; TGB - torpedo gunboats

PART 1 - LOG BOOKS

and THEIR PLACE IN THE LOCATION OF ROYAL NAVY SHIPS in WORLD WAR 1

HMS Invincible, battlecruiser (Maritime Quest)

THE LOG BOOKS

The log books of over 310 Royal Navy vessels, totalling 300,000 pages and covering periods ranging from 1913 to 1923 (mainly from 1914 to 1918) were chosen for transcription by the Zooniverse Old Weather Project (click here for more information). The main selection criterion was that vessels were serving away from British home waters and thus sailing in seas where little weather data had previously been collected. In the process, some 70 percent of the larger vessels serving outside the British Isles - capital ships, cruisers etc. have had their log books transcribed. These are now being edited, and with maps or "Journey Plots" added, all thanks to a small and dedicated group of Old Weather Volunteers.

The complete set of log books are listed below in three columns - by name, by ship type, and by log book starting year -  to help researchers find their own particular areas of interest. There are also links back to the log book index at regular intervals.

Note that the Stations, Squadrons, Forces, duties etc. that the ships have been allocated to, may need further research. Unfortunately these details are rarely available in the log books, which however, must be as accurate as it is possible to be, at least for approximate ships locations on any given day.

Although this project only covers a limited number of ships, their log books frequently identify other vessels they encountered. Searching appropriate log books may well reveal other vessels of interest.

THE PLACE OF THE LOG BOOKS IN THE LOCATION OF ROYAL NAVY SHIPS IN WORLD WAR 1

The tables below were compiled to help assess the comprehensiveness of the Old Weather log book coverage. The ships are mainly those taken from the Dittmar and Colledge Fleet Distibution lists. Cruisers include depot ships and those on harbour service

Table Cell Colours: WHITE - in British home waters; LIGHT GREY - overseas, but including Northern Patrol; DARK GREY - log book coverage

Log book coverage: may cover all or part of that year; may not cover all events in cells; in the 5 August 1914 column, may cover pre-WW1 activities; in the 11 November 1918 column, may cover post-WW1 activities.

These tables illustrate how many major warships stayed in British home waters (WHITE), and how few were available for other theatres (GREY) other than the old battleships and cruisers. Even the armed merchant cruisers were in effect mainly allocated to home waters.
