 ALLEN, Raymond A E, Able Seaman, D/JX 418823, killed

HUSTLER, Gordon H, Lieutenant, RNR, killed

SANDERS, Donald, Able Seaman, 585828 (SANF), DOWS

(with thanks) Lt Hustler had previously served with light cruiser Manchester, battleship Duke of York and light cruiser Edinburgh before joining the original draft of HMS Test in late 1942. While based at Londonderry, her base ship had been HMS Ferret. At the time of his death, Gordon was Test's navigator, and of Raymond and Donald, one was coxswain of her motor launch and the other had joined just before she sailed from Rangoon for Operation Adoption. They were to gather intelligence on Japanese movements along the Burmese coast around Tavoy Point on the Tavoy River. Test sent a party in, led by Lt Hustler, in her motor launch and as it neared the shore, a Japanese observation post opened fire with a heavy machine gun (possibly 7.7mm) and rifles, the three men were killed and others wounded. One of the crew who survived was Mr Claude Waring. The information was provided by Phill Townsely, whose late father was wounded at the same time, and is confirmed by Gordon Adams, Lt Hustler's nephew.
