RAMPLIN, Francis C
'Paddy',
Petty Officer Telegraphist (A), JX 646362,
TOOLEY, Leslie M, Lieutenant, pilot
With
thanks to Lieutenant Brian Grindley
RN, Rtd - My friend, Norman
Cleary and I, both Leading
Telegraphists (Aircrew), were trained
by 'Paddy' on different courses. It
was understood at the time that the
aircraft (believed to be a Gannet of
824 Sqn flying from HMS Eagle(?))
had hit the carrier's round down on
their landing approach but I cannot
find anyone now to confirm this.
And with
thanks to David Christmas (1 Feb
2013), then a Midshipman in Ark Royal,
and posted on 6 June 1956 to HMS
Glasgow. He now lives in Australia.
Extract and map from his journal
follows - "Exercise
Cascade 3.
"Tragedy struck
early Thursday morning when it was
reported that two contacts, one of which
was known to be one of our Venoms,
disappeared from the radar screen.
Nothing was ever heard of the aircraft
again although it was later established
that the second contact was a Shackleton
on which the night fighter had been
making an attack.
"We turned in
our tracks and proceeded to send out our
Gannets in search of the missing
aircraft but trouble never comes singly.
A Gannet, piloted by Lt Tooley, flipped
on its back as it was fired from the
catapult and washed into the sea. No
trace was found. A memorial service was
held on the quarterdeck the following
evening in memory of the five who lost
their lives in these two accidents."
Notation on
map following - "0130/8 (8th
March 1956) Gannet and Venom lost.
Escort detached for search"
