D or DEFENDER-Class Destroyer Flotilla Leader ordered from HM Dockyard, Portsmouth in the 1930 Build Programme on 2nd February 1931. The ship was laid down on 29th September 1931 and was launched on 7th July 1932. She was the 5th RN ship to carry the name introduced in 1805 which had last been used for a battleship sold in 1920. Her build was completed on 31st August 1933 with the propulsion machinery provided by Beardmore at a cost of £139,768. The contract price for commercially built ships of this Class varied between £223,000 and £290,000.  After Acceptance Trials and work-up the ship served in the Mediterranean as Leader of the 1st Flotilla until 1933 when she refitted in UK prior to transfer with the Flotilla to the China Station. As Leader of the 8th Flotilla she remained in the Far East until the outbreak of war in September 1939. This destroyer was adopted by the civil community of the county of Angus. Scotland after a successful WARSHIP WEEK National Savings campaign in May 1942.

September             Transferred to Mediterranean Station.

                                (Note: Flotilla had been redesignated 21st Destroyer Flotilla before the

                                declaration of war with Germany.)

                3rd           Took passage from Singapore with HM Destroyers DAINTY, DIANA

                                and DARING.

                30th         Arrived at Alexandria to join the Mediterranean Fleet.

                                (Note: These ships were in poor state of operational readiness due to

                                their age and the ocean passage.)

 

October                   On completion of repair deployed for contraband control duties to

                                enforce the blockade of shipping carrying cargoes destined for Germany.

 

November               Fleet duties for contraband control with 21st Flotilla in continuation.

 

December                Transferred to Home waters on relief by RAN destroyers.

                6th            Took passage from Gibraltar as escort for HM Battle ship BARHAM

                                 during passage to UK with HM Destroyer DUCHESS.

                12th          Arrived in Clyde and transferred to 3rd Destroyer Flotilla, Home Fleet

                                 (Note: HMS DUCHESS was involved in collision with HMS BARHAM

                                 in dense for on 10th December and sank with heavy loss of life.

                16th         Deployed for Home Fleet Flotilla duties.)

                                 (Note: Home Fleet destroyers were deployed as escort for Norwegian

                                convoys and screening of major units.

January                   Home Fleet duties with Flotilla in continuation.

                17th         Involved in collision with mercantile whilst part of escort for Convoy ON18

                                during passage to Norway. Position 58.27N 02.00W

                18th         Taken in tow to Invergordon by HM Destroyer IMPULSIVE escorted by HM

                                Destroyer EXMOUTH.

                                (Note: HMS EXMOUTH was sunk by U22 in Moray Firth on 21st January

                                with no survivors.)

                19th         Under temporary repair at Invergordon.

 

February

                15th         Taken in tow by HM Tugs ST MELLONS and NORMAN and escorted by HM

                                Destroyers DIANA and BRAZEN during passage to Rosyth for repair by HM

                                Dockyard.

                17th         Taken in hand for repair.

 

March                     Under repair

to                             Pennant Number for visual signalling purposes changed to I99.

                22nd        Carried out post refit trials on completion of dockyard work.

                                Passage to Scapa Flow to resume Flotilla duties with Home Fleet.

                                COSSACK, MAORI and SIKH during minelay at northern end of East Coast

September               Home Fleet Flotilla duties in continuation, based at Scapa Flow.

 

October                   Transferred to 13th Destroyer Flotilla based at Gibraltar.

                30th         Passage to Gibraltar to join Flotilla.

                                (Note: HM Aircraft Carrier ARK ROYAL, HM Battleship BARHAM, HM

                                Cruisers BERWICK, GLASGOW and SHEFFIELD were escorted to

                                Gibraltar from Clyde by Home Fleet destroyers.)

 

November

                6th           Joined 13th Flotilla as Leader on arrival at Gibraltar.

                7th           Deployed as Force B with HM Destroyers ISIS, FOXHOUND, FORESTER,

                                FIREDRAKE, FAULKNOR, FURY and FORTUNE as screen for HMS ARK

                                ROYAL and HMS SHEFFIELD to provide cover for passage in the western

                                Mediterranean of warships to reinforce the Fleet at Alexandria and to carry

                                out an attack on Cagliari (Operation COAT).

                15th         Joined Force A with HM Destroyers WISHART and FURY as screen for HM

                                Aircraft Carrier ARGUS and HM Cruiser DESPATCH during aircraft delivery

                                to Malta (Operation WHITE)

                19th         Returned to Gibraltar with ships of Force B which had provided cover for

                                WHITE.

                                (Note: Owing to failure of an arrangement for an aircraft from Malta to meet

                                the incoming HURRICANE aircraft this delivery failed and sustained

                                losses. See MALTA CONVOYS by R Woodman.)

                24th         Deployed with HM Destroyers HOTSPUR, HM Corvettes GLOXINIA,

                                HYACINTH, PEONY and SALVIA as escort for three mercantiles

                                during passage in the western Mediterranean.

                                (Part of Operation COLLAR- See Naval Staff History.)

                27th         Detached after Italian warships reported on passage to attack British units

                                and joined Force B covering passage of HM Cruisers MANCHESTER

                                and SOUTHAMPTON taking troops to Malta and on passage to reinforce

                                Fleet at Alexandria. (Operation COLLAR)

                27th         After rejoining ship disabled by machinery defect and taken in tow.

                                Later propulsion was restored

                                (Note: As Battle Honour SPARTIVENTO was awarded it is assumed

                                that ship must have been deployed with screen for Force B

                                during the brief engagement. For details see ENGAGE THE ENEMY MORE

                                CLOSELY by C Barnett, THE BATTLE FOR THE MEDITERRANEAN by D

                                Macintyre and Naval Staff History. The conduct of this engagement by Admiral

                                Somerville was criticised but a Board of Enquiry later agreed that

                                HERO as escort for four mercantiles during passage in western

                                Mediterranean (Operation EXCESS – Deployed as Force F.)

                                (Note: These four ships comprised a military convoy taking stores

                                including tanks and ammunition to Piraeus and Alexandria.

                8th           Detached from Force F and joined screen of Force H providing cover.

                                (Note: Force H comprised HM Battlecruiser RENOWN.

                                HM Battleship MALAYA, HMS ARK ROYAL and HMS SHEFFIELD)

                9th           Force H ships detached from covering off Bizerta.

                                Under Italian air attacks which were ineffective.

                11th         Returned to Gibraltar with Force H and resumed Local Flotilla duties.

                31th         Detached for service with Force H and joined HM Destroyers ISIS,

                                ENCOUNTER and JUPITER as Group 3 as escort during Malta aircraft

                                Delivery by HMS ARK ROYAL (Operation PICKET).

                                (Note: A joint operation to carry out a bombardment of Genoa was

February

                9th           Joined HM Destroyers ISIS, FIREDRAKE and JUPITER to form Group

                                3 of Force H as escort for HMS ARK ROYAL during air operations at

                                Livorno.

                                (Part of operation GROG (ex-RESULT) for Genoa bombardment.)

 

March                     Nominated for escort duty at Freetown.

                10th         Detached for escort of HM Battlecruiser REPULSE during passage with

                                HM Aircraft Carrier FURIOUS taking replacement aircraft to Takoradi

                                for delivery to Middle East.

                                On arrival to passage to commenced convoy escort duties based at

                                Freetown.

 

April                       Deployed at Freetown for convoy defence

                1st           Joined military convoy WS7 as Local Escort during passage into

                                Freetown with HM Destroyer FOXHOUND.

                21st         Deployed at Gibraltar and joined HM Destroyer FAME, FAULKNOR,

                                FEARLESS, FIREDRAKE, FORESIGHT, FORESTER, FOXHOUND,

                                FURY (of 8th Flotilla) and HM Destroyer LIGHTNING and as screen for

                                HMS RENOWN, HM Battleship to provide cover for passage in western

                                Mediterranean of Malta supply convoy.

                23rd         Under air attacks.

                24th         Detached with ships of Force H and took return passage to Gibraltar.

                25th         Under air attacks.

                27th         Resumed Flotilla duties on arrival at Gibraltar.

 

August

                4th           Resumed Flotilla duties at Gibraltar for convoy defence and patrol.

 

September

                24th         Detached for service with Force H and joined HM Destroyers GURKHA,

                                FORESIGHT, FORESTER, ZULU, LANCE. LIVELY, LEGION as

                                screen for HM Battleship RODNEY during provision of cover

                                for passage of Malta supply convoy GM2 during passage to Sicilian

                                Narrows (Operation HALBERD).

                25th         Deployed with Close Escort for GM2.

                                (Note: Covering Force included HMS NELSON, HMS ARK ROYAL

                                 and HM Cruiser HERMIONE.)

                27th         Under air attacks and rescued pilot of FULMAR aircraft shot down by

                                Friendly Fire from HMS RODNEY.)

                29th         Carried out attacks on Italian submarines DISPARO and SERPENTE

                                without result.

                30th         Resumed Local Flotilla duties on return to Malta with Force H ships.

 

October                   Deployed with Flotilla at Gibraltar for convoy defence and anti-submarine Patrol duties.

                                Nominated for refit in UK.

                22nd        Deployed with HM Destroyers COSSACK, LAMERTON, VIDETTE, HM

                                Sloop ROCHESTER, HM Corvettes HELIOTROPE. MALLOW

                                BLUEBELL and CARNATION as escort for inward Convoy HG75 to UK from Canada.

                                (Note: HM Catapult Armed Merchant Ship ARIGUANI was also part of the escort for

                                this convoy which was under threat from BRESLAU U-BOAT Group.)

                23rd        Drove off night attacks by U-Boats with ships of escort.,

                                HMS COSSACK hit by torpedo from U653 and taken in tow

                                (Note: Attempts to save this famous destroyer failed and she sank on 27th.)

                25th        Convoy shadowed by KONDOR aircraft.

                                Threat of attack by Italian submarine FERRARIS foiled by CATALINA

                                aircraft and later sunk by HMS LAMERTON.)

                26th        Carried out anti-submarine operations with HMS ROCHESTER and HMS

                                MALLOW during night attacks.

                                (Note ; HMS ARIGUANI was hit by torpedo from U83 and sustained

                                damage. See HITLER’S U-BOAT WAR by C Blair for details

                                of HG75 defence.

 

November

                3rd          Detached from HG 75 on arrival in Clyde and took passage to Thames.

                                (Note: 4 mercantiles of the 17 which sailed from Gibraltar were lost

                                during passage of HG75.)

                15th        Arrived at Sheerness and de-ammunitioned.

                16th        Taken in hand for refit by HM Dockyard, Chatham.

                                (Note: This convoy was destined for Aden and Bombay.)

                17th         Joined convoy in Clyde with HM Battleship MALAYA, HM Aircraft

                                Carrier EAGLE, HM Cruiser HERMIONE, HM Destroyers ACTIVE

                                ANTHONY, BLANKNEY, CROOME, FIREDRAKE, LAFOREY,

                                LIGHTNING for Ocean Escort in Atlantic.

                21st         Detached from WS16 with same ship and took passage to Gibraltar

                                to resume Flotilla duties as Leader of 13th Flotilla.

                                (Note: Ships of Ocean Escort were relieved by HM Cruiser NEWCASTLE

                                and HM Destroyer PALADIN. HM Aircraft Carrier FORMIDABLE

                                was also with Ocean Escort and remained with WS16 until arrival in

                                Freetown.)

                27th         Deployed with HM Destroyers LAFOREY, LIGHTNING. ACTIVE,

                                ANTHONY, WHITEHALL, WISHART, BLANKNEY and CROOME

                                as screen for HM Battleship MALAYA. HM Aircraft Carriers ARGUS

                                and EAGLE as escort during Malta aircraft delivery

                                (Operation SPOTTER I).

                28th         Returned to Gibraltar with same ships.

                                (Note: SPOTTER I was cancelled when it was discovered that aircraft

                                were fitted with incorrect fuel tanks.)

 

March

                20th        Detached for service with Force H and joined HM Destroyers LAFOREY

                                ACTIVE, ANTHONY, WHITEHALL, WISHART, BLANKNEY,

                                EXMOOR and CROOME for screening of HMS MALAYA, HMS Aircraft

                                Carriers EAGLE and FURIOUS during two Malta aircraft deliveries.

                22nd       Operation aborted due to aircraft fuel tank problems.

                23rd        Returned to Gibraltar with Force H ships.

                27th        Sailed from Gibraltar for screening duties during Malta aircraft delivery

                16th        Detached from escort on arrival at Greenock and took passage to Tilbury.

                24th        Taken in hand at Thames commercial shipyard for conversion after call at

                                Sheerness to land ammunition.

                28th        Deployed with HM Destroyer VIDETTE, HM Frigate TAY, HM Corvettes

                                PINK, SUNFLOWER, SNOWFLAKE, LOOSESTRIFE and two Trawlers.

                29th        Under heavy attack by STAR Group of U-Boats and engaged U650 and U532. See above

                                references and CONVOY ESCORT COMMANDER b y P Gretton.

                                (Note: Peter Gretton was in command of this ship and later was promoted to Commander

                                for his distinguished service. He retired from the RN as a Vice Admiral and one of

                                his most renowned appointments was as Flag Officer Sea Training at Portland where

                                he was responsible for the training of ships companies of newly built warships or those

                                others before starting a new commission.)

 

May

                3rd          Detached from convoy with HM Destroyers PENN, IMPULSIVE and

                                PANTHER due to shortage of fuel.

                                (Note: This ship had not been fitted with additional storage for fuel during

                                her conversion and was classified as a Long Range Escort.)

                17th        Deployed with Group as escort for inward Convoy SC130.

                18th        Took part in anti-submarine operations in defence of heavy U-Boat attacks.

                19th        Shared credit with HMS SNOWFLAKE for sinking of U381 in position

                                54.41N 34.45W. There were no survivors.

                                (Note: This publication states that records that submarine was in fact U636

                                and that circumstances of loss of U381 is not known.).

 

June                        Atlantic convoy defence with Group in continuation.

                                (Note: Support Groups were available to provide additional support for

                                convoys under attack or know to be under direct threat.)

                15th        Provided support for defence of outward Convoy ON206 with HMS

                                VIDETTE, SUNFLOWER, LOOSESTRIFE and PINK.

                                (Note: This convoy was under attack from several submarines.)

                16th         Rescued 15 survivors from U470 which had been sunk by aircraft attack.

                                Detached and took passage to support Escort Group B4 in defence of outward Convoy ON20.

                17th        Took part in anti-submarine operations against SCHLIEFFEN Group

                                of submarines in conjunction with aircraft.

                23rd        Deployed with Group and LIBERATOR aircraft in support of outward

                                Convoy ON207 under threat of attack by SIEGFRIED U-Boat Group.

                                Took part in sinking of U274 with HMS VIDETTE and aircraft of

                                24 Squadron RAF. See above references.

                28th        Redeployed for defence of outward Convoy ON208

                29th        Shared credit for sinking U282 in position 55.28N 31.57W with HMS

                                SUNFLOWER and HMS VIDETTE. There were no survivors.

                                (Note: U282 was attempting to carry out attack on U208.)

                                On release took passage to support inward Convoy HX263.

November              Condition of ship gave rise to concern and refit was required before ship

P o s t   W a r   N o t e s

 

HMS DUNCAN was sold to BISCO in September 1945 for demolition at Barrow by T W Ward. The ship arrived at the Breaker’s yard in November and demolition was not completed until 1949. In May 1957 this name was carried forward when given to a Type 14 Anti-submarine BLACKWOOD Class Frigate  when launched at Woolston by J I Thornycroft. She was then deployed a s Leader of the Fishery Protection Squadron and took part in the first Cod War in 1958-59. She later was used for Harbour Training before being scrapped in the 1980’s.
