D or DEFENDER-Class Destroyer Flotilla Leader ordered from HM
Dockyard, Portsmouth in the 1930 Build Programme on 2nd February 1931. The ship
was laid down on 29th September 1931 and was launched on 7th July 1932. She was
the 5th RN ship to carry the name introduced in 1805 which had last been used
for a battleship sold in 1920. Her build was completed on 31st August 1933 with
the propulsion machinery provided by Beardmore at a cost of £139,768. The
contract price for commercially built ships of this Class varied between
£223,000 and £290,000. After Acceptance
Trials and work-up the ship served in the Mediterranean as Leader of the 1st
Flotilla until 1933 when she refitted in UK prior to transfer with the Flotilla
to the China Station. As Leader of the 8th Flotilla she remained in the Far
East until the outbreak of war in September 1939. This destroyer was adopted by
the civil community of the county of Angus. Scotland after a successful WARSHIP WEEK National Savings
campaign in May 1942.

HMS DUNCAN was sold to
BISCO in September 1945 for demolition at Barrow by T W Ward. The ship arrived
at the Breaker’s yard in November and demolition was not completed until
1949. In May 1957 this name was carried forward when given to a Type 14
Anti-submarine BLACKWOOD Class
Frigate when launched at Woolston by J I
Thornycroft. She was then deployed a s Leader of the
Fishery Protection Squadron and took part in the first Cod War in 1958-59. She later was
used for Harbour Training before being scrapped in the 1980’s.
