Flotilla
Leader for W-Class Destroyers ordered from
John Brown at Clydebank
with the 9th Emergency Flotilla in December
1941. The ship was laid down on
24th June 1942 and was to be named HMS
VALENTINE. This was changed as part of a
rationalisation of the names to be
used for V and W-Class destroyers. She was
launched as
HMS KEMPENFELT on
8th May 1943 and was the 3rd RN
ship to carry the name, previously used by a
Flotilla Leader built in 1932 and
transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy in 1939
as HMCS
ASSINIBOINE. Build
was completed on 25th October 1943
and she had been adopted after a successful
WARSHIP WEEK National
Savings campaign in March 1943 by the
civil community of Hammersmith, London
