HMS Castleton, Type B close sister-ship, then in USN service (Photo Ships, click to enlarge)

return to Contents List

Ex USS MACKENZIE (Type C NEWPORT-Class) built by Union Iron Works at San Francisco. The ship was laid down on 4th July 1918 and launched on 29th September that year. Commissioned on 25th July 1919 for US Naval service this ship was deployed in the Pacific until 1922 when she was laid up in Reserve at Mare Island. In 1939 she was brought forward for US Navy use and deployed until transfer to the Royal Navy under the UK/US Lend/Lease Agreement on 3rd September 1940. Commissioned on 3rd October that year this destroyer had been selected for use by the Royal Canadian Navy and was renamed HMCS ANNAPOLIS at Halifax. The name like those given to the other destroyers provided under this Agreement was common to places in Britain or Canada and in the USA. The name in this case being that of the city and capital of Maryland common with a town in Nova Scotia. It had not been previously used by the RCN.
