DOGGER
BANK 1915 - BELGIAN COAST 1916 - NORMANDY
1944 - OKINAWA 1945
(last
two awarded
to the 1943 destroyer)
Seventh
time of use by RN when given to this
submarine on launch in 1940.
It was introduced in 1794 for a 5th Class
and last borne by a 1914 built cruiser
sold in 1923.
During
work-up in March 1941 deployed off Norway
and then carried out patrol off Brest to
report movements of German warships before
going to the Mediterranean for service in
the 10th Submarine Flotilla. She carried
out her first patrol from Malta at the
beginning of May 1941 and was deployed off
Tripoli. An attack carried out by Italian
warships and aircraft preparing for
departure of a convoy to Trapani on 12th
May is believed to have caused the sinking
of this submarine, but is not certain.
Although credited to the torpedo boat
PEGASO it is also believed possible that
she was sunk by a mine. The Commanding
Officer was Lieutenant J L Livesay
RN. An
destroyer built in 1943 was given this
name for the eighth time.
