Editor’s notes:

Each day’s entry is a summary of the actual page, usually with routine events omitted. The second line of each day is the ship’s position at noon expressed in decimal format, which is either the co-ordinates of a known port or a point en route. In the second case, the position is occasionally taken from the log but more commonly it is an estimate, calculated with the use of the Journey Plotter program and these are marked [approx]. The course of the river has made many changes since the time of these logs, so I have sometimes altered recorded positions a little to conform to the modern map and avoid showing HMS Widgeon on what is now dry land.

Note that although only a substantive Lt/Cdr, he is referred to as the Captain by courtesy, and the crew, by immemorial custom, refer to him as The Owner. Lt/Cdr Borrett went on to serve on HMS Invincible and was lost with his ship at Jutland.

The Grid was constructed for the navy for the maintenance of the gunboats and is capable of supporting the vessel when it is drawn up onto the bank. I have seen it referred to, but have no details of how it operated.

The vessel is most likely moored bow and stern to buoys. The method is to take a line from the port bow of the vessel to the buoy at the stern and a line from the starboard quarter of the vessel to the buoy at the bow. If you haul up on these lines and simultaneously pay out on the original mooring lines, the vessel will turn through 180º or 16 pts of the compass.
