The Flag of Vice Admiral A.J. Power, CB, CVO, as Vice Admiral Commanding, First Battle Squadron and Second in Command, Eastern Fleet, was hoisted in RENOWN.

115. Operation S.F.

The scale on which operation S F was conducted throughout December was even further reduced, mainly owing to the heavy commitments for minesweepers elsewhere. The 18th Minesweeping Flotilla carried out two patrols at the beginning of the month, otherwise the ships remained at Skaalefiord.

Both patrols were uneventful. The operation was conducted by the Commander in Chief, Rosyth and air cooperation was provided by 18 Group.

116. Visit of the French Commander in Chief to RICHELIEU

Rear Admiral D'Argenlieu, Commander in Chief, French Navy in Great Britain, accompanied by a Staff of three and a liaison officer, arrived at Hatston on 9th to inspect the French battleship RICHELIEU, staying on board her during his visit.

In addition to inspecting RICHELIEU, he went to sea in her for exercises on the 10th and, having called on the Commander in Chief, returned to London by air from Hatston on 11th.

117. Operation SEXTANT

(i) KING GEORGE V, screened by OBDURATE, KEMPENFELT, and TERMAGANT left Scapa on the 7th for Gibraltar to bring the Prime Minister and his staff back to England after the conferences at Cairo and Teheran. The passage was uneventful and the first screen was relieved by ULSTER, ROCKET, and GRENVILLE from Gibraltar on the 10th. The first screen proceeded to Horta to fuel and KING GEORGE V and her second screen arrived Gibraltar on 12th where she was joined by LONDON from Alexandria.

(ii). Owing to the Prime Minister's illness, he was unable to return in KING GEORGE V who sailed with LONDON from Gibraltar on 17th with the second screen. On the 19th the first screen sailed from Horta relieved the second screen who proceeded to Horta to fuel. KING GEORGE V and LONDON with the first screen arrived Clyde on 22nd.

118. Visit of the Commander in Chief to Kola Inlet

(i) During operation F V, the Commander in Chief, Home Fleet, in DUKE OF YORK with Force 1 (JAMAICA, SAVAGE, SAUMAREZ, SCORPION, and STORD) visited Kola Inlet for the first time during the war, between 16th and 18th December.

(ii) The object of this visit was:

(a) To give battleship cover to J W 55 A

(b) To obtain first hand information of British and Russian affairs in North Russia and to support British Forces there by the presence of a battleship.

(c) To visit the Russian Commander in Chief and to obtain his full cooperation in subsequent movements.

These objects the visit appears to have achieved. It was unquestionably a great success locally.

(iii) On arrival at Vaegna the Russian Commander in Chief, Vice Admiral Golovko paid his call and was received with a guard and band. He later walked round the DUKE OF YORK and appeared to be much impressed with the efficiency and cleanliness of the ship.

(iv) In the afternoon of 16th, Commander in Chief visited the Royal Naval Auxiliary Hospital at Vaegna and in the evening gave an official dinner party to Admiral Golovko, members of his staff, the Air General, Admirals Fisher and Archer and officers from Polyarnoe and Murmansk. This was followed by an excellent performance by the Russian Red Fleet Concert Party in the wardroom.

(v) On the forenoon of 17th, Commander in Chief inspected the Russian airfield at Vaenga and then proceeded with his staff in a Russian HUNTER craft to Polyarnoe. On arrival, he was received by Admiral Golovko in the Russian destroyer RAZUMNI and then inspected the Headquarters of the Senior British Naval Officer and the base camp, proceeding from there to the Headquarters of the Russian Commander in Chief.

(vi) Here an agreement was reached about Russian submarine patrols during North Russian convoys and Commander in Chief and his staff then lunched with Admiral Golovko. After a most successful three hours' lunch a further performance was given by the Red Fleet Ensemble and Commander in Chief then returned in the Russian HUNTER craft to DUKE OF YORK at Vaenga.

(vii) A larger party of Russian officers visited DUKE OF YORK during the day. DUKE OF YORK sailed for Akureyri the following day.

(viii) The sinking of the SCHARNHORST a week later underlined the objects of the visit in no uncertain manner and when Force 2 returned to Kola to fuel on 27th December there was no doubt that his visit had fully achieved its purpose. (See also Home Fleet N. 1944/H.F. 1207/51/243 of 21st December 1943)

119. Sinking of the SCHARNHORST

(i) The following is a very brief summary of the destruction of the German battlecruiser SCHARNHORST by the Home Fleet during Operation F V on 26th December (for further details see Commander in Chief, Home Fleet's dispatch).

(ii) The first contact with the enemy steering towards J W 55 B was made at 0844/26 at 16 miles by Force 1. After a prolonged engagement SCHARNHORST was driven off the southward and escaped. (n.b. bottom of page chopped)

(iii) At 1213 Force 1 again contacted the enemy steering for the convoy and again drove him off the southeast in a short engagement during which NORFOLK was damaged aft. This time Force 1 successfully shadowed the enemy from 7 to 8 miles while he retreated to the southward and until he was engaged by Force 2.

(iv). Force 2 closed the enemy at 24-28 knots as indicated by Force 1's shadowing reports. At 1617 he was detected by DUKE OF YORK's radar at 35,500 yards and at 1650 when illuminated by star shell he was engaged by Force 2 at 12,000 yards.

(v) Between 1650 and 1830 SCHARNHORST was pursued by DUKE OF YORK and JAMAICA, both sides turning to southward to open 'A' arcs when firing; the range, owing to SCHARNHORST's speed, opened to 21,400 yards by which both ships had ceased firing. The enemy's gunfire improved as the range opened, DUKE OF YORK being straddled several times at 20,000 yards. DUKE OF YORK hit with her third salvo and later caused underwater damaged to the enemy at extreme range which reduced his speed sufficiently to enable the destroyers to attack. Force 1 also engaged from the northward when the range permitted.

(vi) During this time Force 2's screen had crept up abreast SCHARNHORST to attack with torpedoes if she made an appreciable alteration of course. At about 1820 her speed was reduced by underwater hits from DUKE OF YORK, and at 1850 she altered round to the southward giving SAVAGE, SAUMAREZ, SCORPION, and STORD an excellent opportunity to attack. At 1800 yards the destroyers attacked from opposite sides, subjected to the full fire power of the enemy. Between three and five hits were probably scored.

(vii) In the meantime the range closed to 10,000 yard when DUKE OF YORK and JAMAICA reengaged at 1901. After 15 minutes the enemy was repeatedly hit and on fire.

(viii) At 1928 DUKE OF YORK ceased firing to allow BELFAST followed by JAMAICA to attack with torpedoes; one probable and two possible hits were claimed by these two cruisers. Thick smoke made observation difficult.

(ix) Between 1932 and 1935, MUSKETEER, MATCHLESS, OPPORTUNE, and VIRAGO who had been detached from the escort of JW 55 B and had joined Force 1 delivered a torpedo attack on the enemy from astern, scoring numerous hits which it has difficult to analyze owing to the darkness and the smoke.

(x) SCHARNHORST sank at about 1938 before BELFAST would deliver her second torpedo attack. 36 survivors were picked up by SCORPION and MATCHLESS and transferred later to DUKE OF YORK.

(xi) All units then proceeded to Kola Inlet, arriving there throughout 27th December

(xii) When first engaged by Force 1, radar indicated that SCHARNHORST had destroyers with her, but although unknown destroyer radar echoes persisted throughout the day, no visual contact was made with them was made by our forces.

(xiii) For details of Forces 1 and 2 see paragraph 120.

120. Operation F V

(a) This operation, the passage of J W 55 A, J W 55 B, R A 55 A, and R A 55 B to and from North Russia, was successfully completed according to plan and no casualties to our convoys or their escorts and no enemy interference other than the unsuccessful attempt by SCHARNHORST to attack J W 55 B and a few half hearted approaches by U-boats.

(b) The weather and the time of year were again favourable for these convoys which ran mainly in darkness. R A 55 A was slightly scattered by a gale but .. (n.b. bottom of page chopped).
